Clemson University Extension’s Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) partnered with The Felician Center, Ruth’s Learning Academy, Williamsburg County School District, and the Williamsburg County Special Needs Board to bring the Williamsburg County community a vibrant mix of healthier recipes, budget-friendly shopping tips, smart eating habits, and fun outdoor activities.
The Felician Center
After completing an enriching 8-week nutrition course, adult participants celebrated their achievements with a field trip to Crafty Maibritt LLC. There, they explored an elderberry farm, herb gardens, honeybee pollination, and poultry care. Participants gained hands-on experience in elderberry juice making, learned about local honey production, gathered fresh eggs, and discovered the healing properties of herbs. Many even purchased homemade herbal remedies for common aches and pains. It was an unforgettable blend of education and wellness!

Ruth’s Learning Academy
Children in the after-school program got their hands dirty with The Tomato Plant Project. From planting and fertilizing, to watering, harvesting, and tasting their own tomatoes, the kids embraced the joy of growing food. The project not only taught them about nutrition and responsibility but also gave them a chance to enjoy fresh air and physical activity.

Williamsburg County School District
The Williamsburg County School District, including students from Kingstree Senior High and Hemingway Career and Technology Center, participated in six interactive classes featuring recipes, hands-on activities, and lessons from the Teen Cuisine curriculum. Juniors and seniors in the culinary department took the lead in preparing a variety of nutritious dishes while exploring the importance of balanced meals over fast food and sugary beverages. Through cooking, discussion, and teamwork, students gained valuable insights into making healthier choices that support lifelong wellness.

Williamsburg County Special Needs Board
Participants engaged in interactive PowerPoint presentations, writing exercises, and Q&A sessions focused on promoting physical activity and healthy eating habits. Through relatable examples and engaging discussions, they explored practical ways to make healthier choices in their daily lives.
Together, The Felician Center, Ruth’s Learning Academy, and the Williamsburg County Special Needs Board, Kingstree Senior High, Hemingway Career and Technology empowered over 150 participants through a dynamic blend of Eating Smart and Being Active and Choose Health: Food, Fun, and Fitness curricula. From hands-on gardening and farm tours to engaging classroom activities and wellness workshops, participants of all ages embraced healthier lifestyles, learned practical nutrition skills, enjoyed the benefits of outdoor movement and community connection. This collaborative effort planted seeds of wellness across Williamsburg County, nurturing minds, bodies, and spirits for a healthier tomorrow.
